Lyon
County has been a bi-annual participant in the
Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) program
since its inception. The KIP Survey has been
administered in Kentucky for a number of years
through the Substance Abuse Prevention Program in
the Cabinet of Health and Family Services, through
agreements with individual school districts across
the state. The intent of the survey is to
anonymously assess youth use of alcohol, tobacco,
and other drugs (ATOD) as well as a number of
factors related to potential substance abuse.
Extensive efforts go into assuring the anonymity of
youth who fill out the brief survey, and to insuring
that no child feels coerced to participate. Parents
who do not wish their child to participate are given
the opportunity through both general and specific
notifications that they may refuse on behalf of
their child.
Basing the survey on the federal model enables
comparisons to other states and to the nation, while
at the same time making within-state comparison
possible. The fact the KIP survey has been
administered for a number of years within Kentucky
enables school – community comparisons over time.
The
Lyon County data (represented by the blue bars)
presented in the following pages is from the latest
youth self reported survey taken in 2006. A new
survey was taken in fall 2008, however results are
not available at this time.
The
data represented by the red bar is for youth with
Western Ky. The green bar represents youth across
the entire state of Kentucky. Finally the yellow
bar represents data for you across the US.
As
can be seen on the following six pages, youth in
Lyon County have abuse rates above region, state and
national averages in all categories and various age
groups. For these reasons, Lyon County Champions
Coalition works with many community partners to
provide programs for the prevention of youth
substance abuse.
